About CUS: About Us

History

Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. Â® has been in existence since April 29, 1980. Established on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers – the State University of New Jersey, CUS was officially voted into the Greek council on March 11, 1981. Our founders are 7 Latinas who had the desire to create an organization to promote leadership amongst the Latino community. More importantly, it was their desire to create a sisterhood – a place away from home in which the members could feel the strong sense of family, which is such a force in the Latino culture.

These women built a distinct organization that focuses on celebrating independence, educating the community, appreciating each other’s differences, the ideals of womanism, molding powerful spiritual bonds, and empowering women to change the course of history.

The women of Chi Upsilon Sigma ® consider this sisterhood to be a lifelong commitment, not only to the organization, but also to each other. Ours is a flame that burns eternal and a bond that joins us to one another forever. The enduring legacy that began over 40 years ago, still exists today.

Mission Statement

We, the members of, Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated®, aware of the prejudices and obstacles facing the minority women of our communities, dedicate ourselves to improving these conditions and to working towards the betterment of all women. We have unified ourselves through the sisterhood of Corazones Unidos Siempre and by our Founders’ ideals of open communication and community service, as well as the development of political, educational, cultural and social awareness. We devote ourselves to this challenge, to be achieved through hard work, patience and the collective effort to educate, as is exemplified in our motto, ‘Wisdom Through Education’.
